H. COMOY & C° Ltd

The history of the Comoy family begins in 1825. Before the discovery of briar, the Comoy family crafted pipes from boxwood for Napoleon’s grenadiers, in the small village of Avignon, a few kilometers from Saint-Claude. It was in 1856 that the Comoy house discovered briar for pipe making, marking the beginning of Saint-Claude’s ascent as the world capital of pipes. In 1879, Henry COMOY immigrated to London with some technicians from his Sanclaudian factory and established the first English pipe factory, H. COMOY & C° Ltd. The Saint-Claude factory supplied the rough blocks and the pipe heads. After the First World War in 1922, the association between COMOY and CHAPUIS became effective, and the Saint-Claude company took the name CHAPUIS-COMOY & Cie. Henry Comoy passed away in 1924, leaving his sons Paul and Adrien to lead the factories in Saint-Claude and London, alongside their cousins Emile and Louis Chapuis. By 1928, London was able to manufacture its own pipes, and to develop Saint-Claude, the CHACOM brand was created using the first three letters of the partners’ names. Until 1939, the CHACOM brand was only known in France, Belgium, and Switzerland so as not to interfere with COMOY pipes that shared the same criteria of shape and quality. Nowadays, Chacom pipes are exported to 35 countries worldwide.
